The project was approved by the Government of India in 1999 and entrusted to the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited, later switched to NHPC Limited. Due to environmental concerns as well as concerns in Bangladesh over downstream effects, the project remains under discussion and no construction has yet taken place.
