A looming vacancy in New York's 21st Congressional District is setting the stage for a partisan showdown. Democrats in the New York State Legislature are reportedly drafting a bill to extend the deadline for setting the special election.

The chairs of the Democratic Party representing New York's 21st Congressional District have chosen their candidate to run for Rep. Elise Stefanik's seat in a potential special election. The party announced Tuesday that it had chosen Blake Gendebien to run for Stefanik's seat if she is approved as Donald Trump's nominee for U.

The group of 15 representatives from NY-21’s 15 counties unanimously chose Blake Gendebien, a dairy farmer from St. Lawrence County, as the presumptive Democratic nominee.

ALBANY — Democratic leaders have selected dairy farmer Blake Gendebien to run in the special election for New York’s 21st Congressional seat — although when that election will take place is increasingly unclear.

The Republican and Democratic committees are still considering their candidates for the planned special election in New York's 21st Congressional District, but both parties have a set of apparent frontrunners.

Democratic chairs in the 15-county district on Tuesday agreed to put the 48-year-old Lisbon man on the ballot line once Gov. Kathy Hochul calls a special election.

"I’m honored and deeply grateful to each of the 15 Democratic chairs. They have run a thoughtful process that has brought out the best in each of us at a particularly challenging time," said Democratic Candidate Blake Gendebien in a statement.
