U.S. stocks tiptoed to more records after a quiet day of trading. The S&P 500 edged up by 2 points, or less than 0.1%, on Tuesday to set an all-time high for the 55th time this year.

The S&P 500 went up 14.77 points or 0.2% to close at 6047.15, a record closing high. It is the index's 54th record close of 2024. The Nasdaq Composite gained 185.78 points or 1% to finish at 19403.95, a record close. It is the index's 33rd record close of 2024.

Asian shares mostly rose Tuesday, after technology stocks pulled Wall Street to another record finish. The S&P 500 rose 0.2% Monday from the previous session's all-time high to post a record for the 54th time this year.
