Another musical — “ Wicked ,” the smash Broadway adaptation — came away with nearly as many nominations. Jon M. Chu’s lavish “Wizard of Oz” riff scored 10 nominations, including best picture and acting nods for its stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The story is based on Chittenango native L. Frank Baum ’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” novels.

Other films singled out by the organization include "Queer," "My Old Ass," "Love Lives Bleeding" and "Drive-Away Dolls"

"Emilia Perez," the Spanish-language story of a Mexican drug lord who transitions to a woman and starts a new life, earned 13 nominations. "The Brutalist," a 3 1/2-hour tale about a Holocaust survivor and architect chasing the American dream, and "The Wizard of Oz" prequel "Wicked" picked up 10 nods each.

The directing lineup encompasses all first-timers — Sean Baker (“Anora”), Brady Corbet (“The Brutalist”), James Mangold (“A Complete Unknown”), Jacques Audiard (“Emilia Pérez”) and Coralie Fargeat (“The Substance”), a first since 1997 where James Cameron’s “Titanic” swept the ceremony. In fact, 13 of the 20 actors recognized their inaugural noms.
