A Philadelphia police officer was shot in the hand Tuesday night, police said. The officer was shot just before 9 p.m. near the intersection of North 23rd Street and West Indiana Avenue and was taken to Temple University Hospital, police said.

The officer has since been released from the hospital, and officials credit his bulletproof vest with protecting him from a more serious injury.
