In a triumph for research and forecast improvement efforts, the Center's track forecast performance for 2024 was the best in its history.

Each year, the National Hurricane Center moves through an alphabetical list of names that are attributed to the storms that reach tropical storm or hurricane status. When there are too many named storms in a season for the English alphabet to suffice, the National Hurricane Center pivots to a supplemental list of names.

Last year, forecasters accurately predicted an above-average Atlantic hurricane season for 2024. The season consisted of 18 named storms, including seven tropical storms and 11 hurricanes. Beryl, Helene, Kirk, Milton, and Rafael were five major hurricanes of the season.
