An LPGA policy change means transgender women who have gone through male puberty will not be allowed to compete on leading women's golf tours from next year.

Two national golf associations announced new gender eligibility policies Wednesday that bar transgender women who have gone through male puberty from participating in elite women’s competitions.

The major powers in female professional golf have changed their transgender policies to ban male-born players from their competitions after Hailey Davidson came within one shot of qualifying for the US Women’s Open in June.

The USGA’s updated policy states that any transgender athlete who has experienced any part of male puberty beyond Tanner Stage 2 may not compete in its championships. In the event that it’s not possible to demonstrate whether or not Stage 2 occurred, the athlete must demonstrate that they have not experienced any part of male puberty after age 12.

The policies, which were announced in tandem on Wednesday, prohibit athletes who have experienced male puberty from competing in women’s events.

Both the LPGA and USGA announced on Wednesday new updates to their gender policies that will take effect in the 2025 season.

The USGA and LPGA have announced major changes to their gender participation rules ahead of the new season following a lengthy review. Previously, transgender females were allowed to compete in USGA and LPGA-sanctioned events providing they had undergone the necessary gender reassignment.
