Police have identified a van driver who fled the scene of a crash with a tram after a three-year-old girl died in Manchester city centre, it is understood. The collision occurred at 9.56am on Saturday between a van and a tram on Mosley Street.

After colliding with the tram, the van had been forced onto the pavement where it hit the girl, police said.

Emergency services were scrambled to the city centre road at the junction of Booth Street this morning at around 10am following reports of a collision between a tram and a van. It is understood that the van then rebounded onto the road, hitting the young girl who was rushed to hospital. She later sadly died of her injuries.

The child was a pedestrian and was not travelling in either the tram or van during the collision on Mosley Street
