Mar 22, 2024 · According to the university's library archives, the first mascot UAB had was a Viking named Blazer. He was quickly discontinued: Blazer, who was unveiled at a basketball game in 1993, was terminated before the football season after the mascot initially "scared children at basketball games."

At a basketball game on January 9, 1993, UAB unveiled a new mascot, the Blazer. The mascot scared children at the basketball games, and many segments of the university community objected to the sword carrying militant Viking-like warrior.

So what happened to the orange-feathered fowl with the big beak? “Legend has it, though we have no confirmation in our resources here, that Bartow and others felt a chicken was not the appropriate mascot for UAB once we had an NCAA Division III football team in 1991,” says Tim Pennycuff, UAB archivist and associate professor.
